The Big Debate: single or multiple home screens?

Feb

02:00 am

If you missed last Sunday’s Nokia Connects Big Debate you can catch up with it somewhere around here before moving onto today’s.

And with this next installment we say thank you to Steve, who's participation previously has sparked our next topic of discussion/argument! 8-) Single or multiple home screens? While the debate was raging in the comments section, with many points of view for both swipe and pressing 'home' on the Nokia Lumia phones, the debate was in full swing on Twitter too, where Steve stated his preference for a single home screen instead of the swiping N9's three. Nokiapp Showdown #2

16:56 pm

We were so impressed at Nokia Connects Towers with Michael and Cj’s Nokiapp Showdown last week that we were clamouring to have a go ourselves, so with a little persuading Paul and I have been let loose to have our say on Twitter apps.

***** Gravity on the N8 That's me Looks like I get first shot this week, so what do I think of Gravity? Let me share some facts: It was the first app I used on a phone to manage Twitter I first used it on an N97 mini The first tweet I sent using Gravity was on the #N97MiniTour ...and I loved it! The reasons are legion. The interface is so very, very user friendly. [...]

Nokia photography: the best of #Amazingbackground

Since Nokia Connects started asking you for photographs taken with your Nokia phones to put on our Twitter background, we’ve had a whole heap of brilliant pictures!

I never knew he lived so close to Mordor! via Mike Here is another one of my personal favourites. This was actually taken with an N72 by Chani. It shows that with a little bit of imagination you can capture some really unique moments. via Chani Fantastic holiday snap from serial Nokia photographer Irfan, in Aukland. I could see this one on a postcard no trouble! via Irfan Here Alex captures some traffic and their lights at night time. [...]

Yesterday I gave you a bit of a task – matching up photos to the Nokia that had shot them.

A huge 'WELL DONE' to llaadd who was the first to correctly pair up the snaps like this: 1. N82 via Titanas 2. N9 via Tech Pinas 3. Lumia 800 via Chris Davies 4. E7 via Clinton Jeff 5. N8 via Matthaeus Paulus Did you get them all? As Richard pointed out, it was pretty evil, but, you know, just for fun :)

Think you know your Nokia camera shots?

Well, here’s a challenge for you (just for fun, no prizes) – match these photos to the Nokia they were snapped on.

Sounds simple, but is it? They are all cropped and at the same resolution....just call me evil. In the comments, put the phones next to the numbers 1-5 The line up: N8 E7 N9 Lumia 800 N82 The photos (I'll credit them tomorrow, doing it now would give you clues!): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Over to you. Looking forward to seeing who gets this right first :) Check back same time tomorrow for the answers. [...]

Thinner glass could lead to slimmer phones

Just when you thought the mighty Gorilla Glass couldn’t get any better, it has.

via SlashGear So what exactly does this mean for the mobile industry? Well for a start, if the glass used for the screens is 20% thinner than it has been in the past, that means that more can be squeezed into less, making your pocket computer even smaller. Let's take a moment to think about what's held within the casing of the average mobile phone nowadays: A fully-functioning digital camera that often has better optics and more megapixels than the average point and shoot. Nokia N8 shoots the moon

Admittedly with the help of a telescope – but these videos from theycallthislife are *outstanding*!!

A couple of months ago Michael decided to take his N8 and, well, tear it down to its bare soul. It might make for painful reading for those of a sensitive disposition, so look away now if you don't want to see the guts of a beautiful (in my opinion) phone. Once he had completed the task (and understood just how the unit was put together), he rebuilt it (minus the rear casing) to see if it still worked. [...]

How mobile photography changed our lives

The vast majority of us walk around every day with an amazing tool in our pockets, but how many of us actually use it to its full potential?

via All About Symbian (more about them later) A brief personal history I grew up at just the right time to embrace mobile technology. Moving to London town for my 1st job straight out of University, I had to have a mobile. So I got one - and haven't looked back. With time, as phones developed and technology moved on, each new iteration of my Nokia (yes folks, I was a Nokia boy even before I joined Nokia Connects [formerly WOMWorld/Nokia]) had more advanced features, and eventually a camera. Nokia N8: pre and post-Anna

Jan

12:51 pm

Borrowing from a certain Charles Dickens, Anshel Sag has posted an epic ‘Tale of Two Phones’ discussion of the Nokia N8.

It doesn't start well for the N8. Before the Symbian Anna update, Anshel really wasn't a fan (going as far as to use some quite harsh words), but since then? Well, he's a convert! Naturally the post features the 12MP camera quite heavily, but each and every other aspect gets a thorough examination too, and despite what you may have thought at the start of the post, it doesn't actually feature the Symbian Anna update too much. 10 cool things that happened in December

Jan

23:03 pm

It’s 2012.

Leap Year. Year of the Lumia. Now is not the time for looking forward, however, but for a little look back at what happened in December. Last year. With so much to choose from - December is always a busy month as people relax into the holidays - I've been scratching my head trying to leave things out. But the task is complete, and the top ten drawn up - including NokiaTube, Design Week and the #AmazingBackground competition (that's ongoing, so may well appear in next month's cool things list).
