Hot off the heels of the Make Me Smile Monday debut last week, we bring you the second edition – I’ve had a rummage through my RSS feed and dug out some of the juiciest bones to get your week off to a slightly better start than usual.

via Mental Floss (it's a cake!) Everyone loves nice, fresh, green vegetables don't they (well, once you grow out of hating them on a point of principle), like the nice plate of asparagus above. Well go ahead, cut me a slice.....wait, what? Yessir, that there bundle of greenery is made of cake! Now, after I recovered from my initial shock, this made me smile. Cake that looks like asparagus. Silicon Suomi: Why Nokia’s right to call Finland home

Jan

01:52 am

Ever since Stephen Elop, the first non Finnish CEO, took over at Nokia there’s been speculation that Nokia should move its headquarters to Silicon Valley.

In some North American journalists' eyes, Suomi, (the Finnish name for Finland) is a godforsaken backwater, a place famous only for saunas, ice swimming and a president who looks like Conan O’Brien. But, there’s some very good reasons why Stephen Elop recently said Nokia’s headquarters would stay in Espoo. And they've got nothing to do with his love of ice hockey. The world’s biggest boffins Innovation takes brains. [...]

Time for the All About…

.. boys to take over this week as I dive into their excellent app coverage from the last week. via Midlifegamer First up, Ewan has played and rated Spider Jack. He gives it a more than respectable 82%, and his description of the gameplay far outdoes anything I could manage (HINT - go have a read). One of the major plus points of the game is the fact that there is no 'arbitrary time limit', allowing you to plot your progress in a 'no pressure' situation. [...]

Nokia N8 shoots the moon

Jan

Admittedly with the help of a telescope – but these videos from theycallthislife are *outstanding*!!

A couple of months ago Michael decided to take his N8 and, well, tear it down to its bare soul. It might make for painful reading for those of a sensitive disposition, so look away now if you don't want to see the guts of a beautiful (in my opinion) phone. Once he had completed the task (and understood just how the unit was put together), he rebuilt it (minus the rear casing) to see if it still worked. [...]

8 mobile myths knocked out the park

Jan

14:00 pm

Let’s face it, we all love our mobiles.

So much so that when we’re not using them, we’re often talking about them. Whether it’s wading in to the never-ending online debate or advising your (no doubt less informed) friends and family in the real world about their next phone, there’s always fat to chew in the mobile world. This chatter is generally a wonderful thing, but inevitably it sees certain myths arise and spread like a crazed wildfire. [...]

How mobile photography changed our lives

The vast majority of us walk around every day with an amazing tool in our pockets, but how many of us actually use it to its full potential?

via All About Symbian (more about them later) A brief personal history I grew up at just the right time to embrace mobile technology. Moving to London town for my 1st job straight out of University, I had to have a mobile. So I got one - and haven't looked back. With time, as phones developed and technology moved on, each new iteration of my Nokia (yes folks, I was a Nokia boy even before I joined Nokia Connects [formerly WOMWorld/Nokia]) had more advanced features, and eventually a camera. [...]

Jan

22:00 pm

Time to have yet another look at what our trialists are up to right now.

This time we're looking at the Lumia 800, more specifically from Timo and Lee's point of view. via techprolonged First up have MeeGo and N9 enthusiast Timo who really wants to see what all the fuss is about with the N9's cousin (can I say that?), so let's have a little look at his first impressions and see how it compares. In the looks department it compares very well, as it looks so much like the N9 which he already says is 'one of the most beautiful devices out there'. [...]
