In some parts of the UK, as much as 20% of the population complain of noise pollution.

In cities, birds have started to sing at night so their song can be heard. Silence, it seems, is increasingly precious. So much so that audio ecologist Gordon Hempton believes that there are fewer than a dozen places in the US, “where natural silence reigns over many square miles.” In Europe, there are none. If, like us, you sometimes craze that relaxing sound of silence, you’ll be pleased to hear about ANC or active noise cancellation technology. [...]

Some of use our phones for staying in touch with myriad social platforms, some for gaming, some for calling their Mum – but a lot of people use their phones to keep up with (or even run) their businesses, so which phones are for them?

Now notice I put the word business in quotes. That's because I'd quite like to have an E7, and I don't use my phone for business. So maybe - to steal a genre from the car industry - the E7 is more of a crossover. Well, that's to be discussed (thoughts in the comments please), but for now let's see what people are saying about it. As an opener, how about an unboxing and review from one of the younger reviewers I've featured on these pages. [...]

Rolling with the Nokia Lumia 800

19:28 pm

Ari Partinen, our resident expert photographer, has taken the Nokia Lumia 800 on a special photo tour, and brings us not only his snaps, but his thoughts on the camera too.

Hello my fellow imaging enthusiasts and mobile snappers. It’s been a while since my latest post and lots has happened since. 'The biggest thing in my Nokia life, naturally, was the announcement of the new Nokia with windows phone, Lumia 800.' Despite my undeniable love of the Nokia N8 I decided to leave it in my drawer when I flew off to Asia a few weeks ago. Instead I packed a fresh out of the box Lumia 800 with me in order to test it in the field and of course to share my highly unscientific test results with you guys. [...]

You probably know your way to work or school by now, and how to get to the shops, but what about when you have to find somewhere that you’ve never been before?

Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive, coupled with Nokia Car Mode (if you're driving, clearly) will get you there quickly, accurately and above all safely. So let's have a look at what people are saying about getting there with their Nokia. First, I'll turn to our friends at Nokia Conversations, who brought news last week that for Nokia owners with phones that run the Nokia Belle OS are able to download Nokia Car Mode from the Nokia Store (with support for the N9 coming at a later date. Thinner glass could lead to slimmer phones

Jan

21:47 pm

Just when you thought the mighty Gorilla Glass couldn’t get any better, it has.

via SlashGear So what exactly does this mean for the mobile industry? Well for a start, if the glass used for the screens is 20% thinner than it has been in the past, that means that more can be squeezed into less, making your pocket computer even smaller. Let's take a moment to think about what's held within the casing of the average mobile phone nowadays: A fully-functioning digital camera that often has better optics and more megapixels than the average point and shoot. The (Nokia) Belle of the Ball

Jan

05:03 am

I’m looking at Nokia Belle today, and what better way to have a look at an OS than to take a look at some of the phones it is available on?

Samir Makwana has been taking a look at the phone for The Mobile Indian. I'll skip to the page on which he discusses the interface (page 3, for reference) and where he states that Nokia Belle: delivers a fresh user experience with intuitive navigation and edge-less icons He discusses the aesthetics of how screens look with Belle, and mentions the 'spiffy' multi-tasking menu. More importantly, he talks about how: [for] Nokia loyalists who would be jumping from Symbian S60v3 or S60v5, this experience would be really welcoming. [...]

20:23 pm

The biggest announcement at CES this week was that of the Lumia 900, the latest Nokia phone to join the upper echelons of our portfolio.

Like the announcement itself the phone is big, bold and said to be setting a new standard. We caught up with a couple of guys in Las Vegas to find out their first impressions and gain an insight of what this phone will mean to mobile users in the US. Here we join Juan Carlos from YourTechReport and Richard Campbell, the man behind .NET Rocks! If you happened to be hiding under a rock whilst the tech juggernaut of CES passed by, you can fill your boots with the full details of the Lumia 900 that we covered earlier in the week. [...]
