NFC.

Tippy-tappy connection-thingy. Whatever you want to call it, there is seemingly no stopping the rise of this exciting technology. And with 20 per cent (about 300 million) of all smartphones expected to be NFC-enabled by 2014, next year is sure to see more and more people getting hands on with it. If you’re still unsure of what NFC is, here’s a quick explanation of the technology: NFC enables two devices to interact via electromagnetic radio fields, transferring small amounts of data wirelessly over short distances or by physical touch. Nokia Lumia 800: One phone, three videos

Dec
22

15:00 pm

Following on from the One Man, Three Unboxings post, I’ve gone for the reverse – one phone, three opinions.

All delivered via the medium of video. The phone in question, as you'll have no doubt worked out from the pic, is the Nokia Lumia 800. Pic courtesy of Mark Guim at thenokiablog Let's roll then. First out of the box, as it were, is an unboxing (see what I did there?) from Blake, a.k.a.windows7blogger. It's a step by step guide to getting started and includes a full walk round of the phone including first boot up of the 'very nice device'. [...]

How social is social in the East?

Dec
22

13:39 pm

Asia is already the world’s largest and most populous continent, and it’s only set to grow in importance in the future.

We decided to take a look further, and find out more about how the East end of the continent does its social networking...  South Korea For much of the past decade South Korea has been thought of as one of the world’s most connected societies. The nation was previously dominated by Cyworld, a home grown social network based on a Sims-like, avatar driven world. Cyword, image by inju on Flickr Cyworld attempted an ill-fated second attempt at cracking the US and Europe markets, but while the Korean network had dreams of world domination, Facebook began taking a lead in its own home territory with the help of a rise in foreign produced smartphones. One man, three Nokia unboxings

Dec
21

22:30 pm

It must be the holiday season.

Why else would one man have a trio of Nokia unboxings on his site? Because it's an early gift for me, that's why! Neil clearly knows that I'm a sucker for an unboxing (I'm in therapy for it, don't worry)....so let's start with the N9. He includes a panoply of excellent pics (one of which is above), totally what you'd expect from an expert unboxing. There are also a few opinions on the phone "The N9 looks very very sleek! See that? That's the Gorilla Glass that is curved so it fades into the body. [...]

Street photography: documenting the now

Dec
21

17:34 pm

Taking pictures is something many of us do almost every day.

Our pictures can range from everyday mundane acts to treasured moments - birthdays, reunions and even the unexpected. via 85mm.ch on Flickr What if documenting the everyday lives of others became an art form? Street photography aims to do just that, and act as a mirror onto society. It’s about people, and what makes them interesting. Street photography has been a recognised form of documentary photography from as far back as 1890, and it continues to grow. [...]

Dec

14:19 pm

Power up the generators!

We've scanned 115,830 square miles of the Philippines (actually we just went online) to find some awesome Nokia fans. Last week we took you to Lebanon and Jordan, we've also hit up India and the USA, so now, without further ado, let's take a trip to the Philippines. We've been keeping a watchful eye on the Nokia content coming from this beautiful country and two guys have stood out for us this time round. [...]

Cameraphones past and present

Dec
20

22:30 pm

There are more than a billion of them and they outnumber the sale of traditional cameras by 4 to 1.

The total number of cameraphones sold has already passed more than the total number of cameras sold in the history of photography. The first ever picture sent by a mobile phone, by Philipe Kahn in 1997 In the space of little over a decade, cameraphones have had a huge impact on the world. We decided to chart their history, and the people who made the great leap forward in technology possible. The birth of the cameraphone Phillipe Kahn is a close as it gets to being described as the father of the cameraphone. [...]

Nokia Lumia 800 review: inside out

Dec
20

17:53 pm

As everyone is fast getting to grips with the latest flagship, thoughts, experiences, reviews, videos, gripes and pensive pondering have been surfacing all over the place.

Let's take a look at a few shall we? Doing his usual thing of diving right into a handset and pulling it apart piece by piece is Dawid. He states early on that there's not much point going into details with the hardware, since you can find out how highly he spoke of it in his N9 review. Although there are a few differences - 'noticeable but fairly minor'  - the one most welcome is the dedicated camera button. [...]

A ringing Nokia N8 endorsement

Dec
20

12:39 pm

It’s not often we concentrate on just one post here @Nokia_Connects, but this one’s special.

In a half-retrospective, half present-day examination of the state of his mobile usage, The Tech Bishop explains why he has come down firmly in the corner of the N8. The main reason, it seems is the hardware, and this is "why I am still so fixated with the N8" It's a fair point. The software inside a phone can be improved upon, updated and tweaked, but the hardware is pretty much fixed once you have it in your hands. [...]

Nokia Connects You #8

Dec
19

15:48 pm

It’s that time of the week again when we look back over the past seven days and collect the top five pieces of cool/inspiring/creative content that we’ve spotted (or that you’ve submitted) and share it with all and sundry.

So, without further ado, let's dive in and see what Nokia Connects You #8 holds in store this week. 1. The politest bear in the world This barely [ha!] needs an introduction, given how far and wide this video traveled last week. At seven seconds, it's probably the shortest YouTube video we've found for NCY... but hey, let's not dilly dally... everyone, say hello to the politest bear in the world. [...]
