‘My Nokia N8 survived a 50 metre sky dive… without a parachute!’

Talk about graduating from the school of hard ‘Noks’!

Courtesy of Matjaz Matjaz had landed safely after taking a daredevil hang glide flight, only to discover that his wallet and Nokia N8 had fallen out of his mistakenly unzipped pocket. The possibility of finding his prized possessions was implausible enough, but getting his phone back in one piece was a mere impossibility, right? Wrong. Oh, and once cast your eye over Matjaz’s incredible story, you might realise you know him from somewhere… his winning N8 Producers entry! It’s fair to say this guy has been through more with his Nokia N8 than most. [...]

Tomorrow begins another installment of one of the world’s largest technology events, the Consumer Technology Show (CES).

Running for many years, CES sets a stage for big players in the industry to launch and showcase their very latest offerings to the world. Over the course of its duration many of the gadgets and innovations we take for granted today were first unveiled at the event. I'm sure this year will be no exception too! Today though, I want to share some interesting nuggets that you might not have known about CES. [...]

Make Me Smile Monday #1

04:42 am

In a bid to beat those Monday blues and turn the proverbial ‘frown upside down’ we’ve delved into the never-ending humour box that is the internet to share with you a new feature on Nokia Connects – Make Me Smile Monday - a look at what’s been bringing a smile to the faces of millions of people across the globe from the last few days.

via Huffington Post (and Legoland) Firstly for this Monday a heart-warming story made of plastic blocks. Yes, everyone's favourite construction 'toy' is branching out at their Legoland Windsor site. In preparation for the upcoming opening of their hotel, they're offering jobs to 8-10 year old 'concierges' - guides to assist younger visitors how best to experience the park. This makes me smile (wish I could have been one!). [...]

In every Nokia Connects You subject today, there is a little something for everyone. Let's kick off shall we? 1. Sticker crazy! Thanks to the Queensland Museum of Modern Art for this fantastic piece of work. [...]

App reviews – cuteTube and…lots more!

Jan

10:23 am

Dear Reader, it’s time now for your regular dose of app updates, and what better way to start the weekend than by taking an injection of news, followed by a longer course of t-app-lets (*wince* – sorry!

..like apps-rin)? Brace yourselves, it won't hurt a bit, in fact you might find the experience helpful. It comes in the form of David Gilson over at All About Symbian who has embraced the issue of YouTube on Symbian^3, and seems to have found the cure to the 'rough time' he says users have been having. The cure comes in the form of cuteTube, an app which David has reviewed in detail. He opens with a walkthrough of the app, highlighting (and indeed demonstrating) the upload option - a feature he says 'sets cuteTube apart from all other YouTube applications on Symbian'. [...]

NokiaTube: where in the world?

17:49 pm

Welcome to this week’s all singing and all dancing NokiaTube: where in the world?

To win you have to upload a video of yourself doing the 'Swipe dance' (reminds me of the pocket dance) but what exactly is this Swipe dance I talk of? Some pretty good moves in there if you ask me and great use of props. If you are not from Slovenia or you just can't dance (like me) then why don't you try out the 'swipe yourself' tool. You can superimpose your head onto the video above, here is one I made earlier: Step 1 - Upload an image + add friends if you want Step 2 - Let the magic happen Why don't you make your own version and post it on @Nokia_Connects? As you can see above there are sharing options for Facebook, Twitter or via email. [...]

Nokia Lumia 710 – video review round up

Jan

11:58 am

Yesterday was THE day to film, edit and post your Nokia Lumia 710 video if the rush of new reviews and unboxings are anything to go by.

Thanks to Jay (and some detective work of my own), here's a few of them for your viewing pleasure: Jay's post draws together videos from the big hitters like The Verge, Mobile Tech Review and Mobile Burn. First up is a quick review from Ross at The Verge. It's a brief walk round of the phone, with some criticism for a few things such as viewing angles of the screen and the placement of the USB charging port. [...]

Take charge of your phone

How long do you leave your phone on charge for?

.. via Sohopeople I'm officially one of the the worst culprits for over charging my phone. Just before I go to bed at night I plug my N8 in and it stays there for the best part of seven hours, when realistically it needs ............. (i'll let you tell me how long an N8 needs to fully charge at the bottom of this post) A few days ago I found an interesting post on Gizmodo from Sam Gibbs regarding charging habits and the costs that people are incurring as part of their daily charging routine. Nokia N8: pre and post-Anna

Jan
5

12:51 pm

Borrowing from a certain Charles Dickens, Anshel Sag has posted an epic ‘Tale of Two Phones’ discussion of the Nokia N8.

It doesn't start well for the N8. Before the Symbian Anna update, Anshel really wasn't a fan (going as far as to use some quite harsh words), but since then? Well, he's a convert! Naturally the post features the 12MP camera quite heavily, but each and every other aspect gets a thorough examination too, and despite what you may have thought at the start of the post, it doesn't actually feature the Symbian Anna update too much.
