You might have read the other day about research by the operator O2, which ranked Nokia at the top of the pile when it comes to the environment. The same research also found that more people than ever are influenced by green issues when buying a new device. That’s great news for the planet because currently only a measly 3% of people bother recycling their mobile phones.
WHY BOTHER?
How many old mobile phones do you have lying around? One, two, three? Our global consumer survey found that 44% of the world’s phones are lying unused in drawers. Rather than have them clutter up your house, you can make a real difference to the environment. If everyone recycled just one of their mobile phones, we could reclaim 240,000 tonnes of raw materials, which would otherwise need to be taken from the earth. That would save as much energy and reduce as much greenhouse gases as taking 4 million cars off the road! And if that’s not a good enough reason already, in many cases you can get some new cash for your old phone.
HOW DO YOU DO IT?
One of the things that stops people giving away their old phone is the fear of losing content: old photos, messages and numbers. But fear not, with Nokia Ovi Suite, you can transfer all your stuff to your PC. Once you’ve cleared the phone, there’s a variety of ways of getting rid of it. In the UK, for example, Compare and Recycle helps you find the place that will give you the best deal for your old phone. Otherwise, you can go to one of over 5000 Nokia recycling points in nearly 85 countries.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM?
Up to 80% of a Nokia device can be recycled. Most mobile phones contain gold, aluminum, copper and platinum, and the materials that are reclaimed can be used for the most unlikely things. Everything from saxophones, kettles and park benches use material from mobile phones. Plastic is often melted down and used to make road cones. Old phones can also be refurbished and re-sold or used to make brand new phones.
WHICH PHONES ARE THE MOST RECYCLED?
It differs from country to country, but in the UK, for example, research by sellmymobile.com, found that 6 of the top 10 most recycled phones were made by Nokia, including the N95 and N73. So if you’ve got one of these, or any phone for that matter, what are you waiting for? Get recycling today!

I didn't know much about mobile recycling until I saw the Mazuma adverts on TV, then I found the comparison site http://www.compareandrecycle.co.uk on Google and sold the three old phones I had laying around for over £80!
I know plenty of people who have old phones just sitting in drawers doing nothing who could be getting money for them but they just won't listen.
Hopefully when people become more aware about mobile recycling more will do it and help the Environment.

We here in Indonesia are getting used to buy a new phone and sell the old one (to a cellphone kiosk or colleague), so we got money to get the new one. We don't know what the buyers do with our old phone. Sometimes they sell it again with second hand price.

I've just had a really upsetting experience with Ovi Suite transferring data from one phone to another, it wouldn't copy all the content at once so I separated it into different folders, but it overwrote the old stuff and now I've lost some very important (sentimentally) messages and pictures. Ovi Suite has been really difficult for this purpose, even though it's good on other functions.

It would have been nice to hear that there was a solution to what had happened, Ovi Suite offers no warnings whatsoever about this being a risk!!!

It would have been great if you had linked to the sites mentioned for the convenience of readers. Not to worry though, a quick Google search lead me to the Compare and Recycle site mentioned in the article where I was able to find a site where I sold my old N95 for £70.
Just have to wait for the freepost bag to arrive and then I can send the phone off and wait for my money!

Nokia is serving as a good example to other mobile phone giants as well. Mobile phone recycling campaigns should be more advertised and marketed to the public for it to be totally effective. Thanks for posting.

I have been working in the New Media Industry for 12 years now, and actually think your rates are spot on with a smaller web agency. $120/hour for a project is pretty fair, compared to what a national or worldwide ad agency will charge for their services. I have seen bid sheets with hourly rates more than twice that amount, and larger companies will most definitely pay these rates to insure the success of their brand.

OK. I have two phones that I don’t use, one of them is not a Nokia, can I recycle that too. Besides, what do I gain from recycling my phones? Does Nokia pay me, cause obviously Nokia is going to use parts from my phone directly or indirectly to make new phones. Do I stand to gain anything from recycling besides joining the green brigades?
