We had questions flying at us from all angles about the N8 when it first launched – and we really appreciated all the interest.
The only downside was that – due to the sheer volume of questions – we couldn’t answer all the questions on the day.
We did, however, say that we’d look to answer them at a later date.
Well, that day has now come. So without further ado, here’s the first in a series of posts with answers to your questions!
The Prodigal Fool: Can you tell us how the virtual keyboard works in Symbian 3? Does it look like the one we’re used to from Symbian 1?
Nokia: The virtual keyboard layout has changed for some parts and we have predictive/corrective text input there as well. The capacitive keyboard is also a step forward in usability. We’ve received encouraging results in user tests.
Thenokiablog: Can we change photo and video capture size? For example change video to smaller 640×480 resolution but faster 30 fps?
Nokia: Yes, the user can change the image & video quality. There are three of those:
720p 25fps
VGA 30fps,
QCIF 15fps for Multimedia message use.
For example 640×480 @ 30fps is available.
JayMontano: Why was the decision made to have the screws visible?
Nokia: These are always a combination of decisions based on design and mechanics.
Dan @WorldOfNokia: I have a question about the camera. Was there a specific reason the lens cover was left out on the N8 when it was on a lot of previous camera phones. This would help prevent scratching.
Nokia: There are many contributing factors here:
1. The availability of new highly scratch resistant materials to protect the lens.
2. The ease of cleaning the camera cover Vs. deep set designs.
3. The increase in size of the raised camera area.
But most importantly:
4. The evolution in applications which make use of the camera e.g. Facebook applications as well as augmented reality applications. Removing the cover means these emerging applications, as well as existing applications, are more seamless in their usage flow.
Charll: What is the real size of sensor? Is it 1/3 inch class or different?
Nokia: It’s 1/1.83″
Envutec: For how many years do you think the battery can last?
Nokia: It is hard to say exactly. How long battery lasts depends on many variables, for example, how often you charge the battery and if you’re using it in a hot environment.
You can prolong the battery life by using the device until the battery is empty and then recharging that to full.
Other ways for you to save energy and battery life are:
- Using the conveniently located ‘lock’ key as often as possible; this shuts down the device display immediately saving energy.
- Activating the power saving profile; this optimizes the functionality and energy consumption for prolonged battery life.
- Adjust the backlighting brightness to change the update interval for e-mail and the browser
- Switch off applications when they’re not needed,
- Switch off W-LAN and Bluetooth when not being used.
Vinitneo: Why didn’t you put 32 GB mass memory like N97 and N900?
Nokia: These are always product specific decisions. The Nokia N8 has 16GB of in-built mass memory, expandable up to 48GB with a Micro SD card. Device user memory (C:\) available is approximately 145MB.
The Nokia N8 has 256MB RAM, improved with dynamic data management. All this results in improved user experience compared to earlier devices.
Atul: How does the N8 support Green Environment commitment?
Nokia: We think that every device should be made with environment in mind, because it makes a real difference to the environment and gives a greater variety of environmentally friendly phones for people to choose from. Our approach and strategy is that we continuously improve the environmental sustainability of all our products.

el n8 tiene una pantalla con resolucion de 640 x 480 pixeles mientras que el n900 es de 480 x 800 quiere decir que el n8 es menor resolucion o por su cualidad capacitiva es mejor

powerful specs with no apps will lead to failure, the iPhone is not even a smartphone, it didn't have multitasking until recently, but what made it so successful is the amount of apps, updates the GUI it has, what are your plans to attract more developers to Ovi store? and to be honest the GUI of symbian ^3 is so basic and there's nothing special about it, is there a possibility to see new updates to the OS with better graphics and transitions ?
i mean its 2010 and people pay more attention to graphics than ever, and like your menu with the black background is kind of boring .. I think Nokia should really consider making some changes and updates.
I'm gonna buy N8 as soon as it hits the markets, but currently I'm an iPhone user, and I know that N8 is a beast when it comes to the hardware but I just hope the user experience is as entertaining as the iPhone.

i have questions too!!!
what is behind your decision to using ARM 11 rather than A8 cortex or some better processor?
do you totally confidence with your new symbian 3 so that ARM11 600Mhz will be enough for this phone?
do you brave enough to guarantee me that this phone never hang/lack like your previous flagship N97?
what abut RAM 256 MB? c'mon. you must be dreaming nokia….
I won't buy this phone except u make changes in hardware…

seriously 256mb ram? and a c:/ 145mb and a 680mhz cpu? wow and u expect it not to fall over like the N97? N97 mini? why has nokia not learnt that its problem is underspec devices at the highend. how in the world to you expect to compete with the iphone4, HTC desire, Samsung Galaxy S, when the N8 which is even out yet is half the grunt of current aging smartphones? stop cheaping out and give the N8 some decent ram, cpu…..NOKIA's become a joke….what happen to the former leader, now just copies (N8 has nothing we haven't already seen)..and badly……living of the glory of the N95 (which was a legendary phone)….seriously you only just got away with the N97 failures (amazed to this day how that isnt a recalled device)…you wont get away with another underpowered, lagging failure……you just have so many previous Nokia fans shaking their heads and why?

i whould 100% buy this phone JUST IF it has the proper cover lense. I realy can not understand why they dont add it on!!!??? If they have the real marketer working along with their R&D within their corp, they must know the fact that most of the people that the camera is important for them on a phones, prefer cameras with cover than without.!!!! they pay higher price for its camera as a highlight of this phone. I can tell they could have million of dollors more revenue if they do so. or they could even design a removable kind of cover to satisfy both groups. is it that hard????

Yes, great phone Hardware but Nokia should of thought about the camera settings , a few user presets would be nice and the layout of the cam controls should be changed to make it more ergonomic, if Nokia were relay cool they would ask us users for our opinion then update the software within the month. and get rid of the crazy pop-ups and ovi logos Thanks

hi,
this is keshav. I am big fanm of nokia n have been used many nokia phone. 1100, nokia 6260, N now N8.
I am using N8 form past 2 month and observed few thing which you should improve on. You might have not noticed but they are very important. So, as I told you I am a big fan of NOkia, I will love to give some advice.
h/w issues
1. RAM is less, so multiple app cant work smoothly. need to wait few sec some time for mob to responce.
sol: incerase RAM to 512 Mb
2. pen drive connector in wrong place, cannot watch movie by keeping on table, so need to hold mob, as we can not rotate the movie ups n down, need to hold he mob, which is painful.
sol: either give option to rotate the video player or put connector in opp side
3.
s/w issues
1. copy and move file option is complicated.
1.1 everywhere move file option is not there
1.2 while selection multiple files, there is no option to mark selective. this gives very tought time to select multiple files 1 by 1(horrible).
2. on call, there is no option to record the call. here need to go to menu n go to recorder. not good, plz imp.
3. to add a new contact no. number of steps are too many, plase reduse it.
sol: on the top all contact, put option like " add new contact"
4. while talking on call, cheek touch can put call on hold or in speaked.(sensitivity is very high)

I will give some more suggestion in future to improve your, mine and our nokia.
thank you
