Tobypaw: Will it be possible to attach a USB-Stick to the N8?
Nokia: With the Nokia N8, you can move large files conveniently with USB on-the-go to memory stick or compatible hard drive and further to PC, ready to upload into video sharing web services.
If the hard drive needs more than 200mAh power, it needs to have an external power supply.
Thaijoni: Will the N8 be totally lag free?
Nokia: Performance is one of our design drivers and Symbian^3 with neat hardware engine is a key contributor to that.
Sheridan01: Is the N8 upgradeable to Symbian 4?
Nokia: We have not announced any such plans.
smashpOp: What’s the lowest aperture on N8 camera?
Nokia: It is fixed at f/2.8. Instead of using the variable aperture from the Nokia N86 we used this space for increasing the size of the optics to improve both video and still images. The new sensor is more sensitive than that used in the Nokia N86 – so even though the aperture is smaller in the Nokia N8, it’s low light ability without flash will be equal to or better in the final product.
Of course, the Xenon flash provides superior images in the case of ‘flash’ shots. There is an ND filter which is used in bright light to prevent any overexposure. Also, we retained the mechanical shutter to prevent motion distortion effects in still images.
Aditya Singhvi: Just wanted to know if the N8 employs a mono speaker or stereo?
Nokia: There is a boosted D-class mono speaker for hands free. It means there’s a better audio quality and volume even with a single speaker.
Endri: Is the screen the same as on the X6?
Nokia: No. The Nokia N8 has a bright 3.5″ AMOLED screen with 16M colours. The resolution is 640×360. The Nokia N8 has a capacitive touch display that brings gestures such as pinch-to-zoom to applications like Photos and Browser.
byePhone: Do you think the N8 would be better served by an OS dedicated to only the N8?
Nokia: The Nokia N8 is the first product with Symbian^3, which offers great improvements in simplification and UX. Creativity will take a leap also thanks to the new QT application development environment. This means developers are getting new tools to bring their innovation on top of Symbian^3 and many other platforms.
Atul: Have you compared the features of N8 with other phones?
Nokia: We believe it is a great device for people who want to create amazing content, connect to their favourite social networks and be entertained with the latest Web TV programs and Ovi Store apps.

Nokia: No.
Fihu: As a camera centric phone, will N8 offer some “artsy” filters or picture post-processing beyond contrast/luminance/sharpness or cliparts?
Nokia: There is a new editing application which provides far greater control than before.
Norman: How about the focus during video capture? Is it initial focus or does it focus continuously?
Nokia: We use a new Active hyper focal distance system for video. This provides highly detailed videos from around 60cm to infinity. Many reviews and discussions on the bells and whistles of the phone. Eg. the 12MP camera, Symbian^3 and the UI, battery replacement/lifespan, touch functions, Ovi integration etc.
My very basic question is this: What kind of Oriental text input/reading support does the N8 have out of the box? I want the ability to input and read messages in Japanese, Chinese, Korean maybe even Thai. I do not want to install additional language packs, or phones that are region-locked to their respective market's language. I want a unified Oriental language input system like the Iphone or Microsoft's Global Input Method Editor (IME). I want the ability to name music albums and contacts with any 2-byte language of my choice.
If Nokia gets this feature right, it will be a major selling point. It will also help allay misgivings users have against the Symbian OS, especially with tight competition from MSFT, Apple and Google.

I love this handset and have been a proud owner of Nokia for more than a decade now Ranging from the 3310,3315,8310 6600,N 93 to N95 ( My current handset . But i am unhappy with the company delaying the launch in India. India has a vast market for these type of electronic gadgets.

The person that has written this FAQ should consider studying what APERTURE in a lens is, since the smaller the number the wider the aperture. So since the N8 has a fixed aperture of F/2.8 it is bigger than any other aperture that has a bigger number below the divider (f/4 is half, f/5.6 is one fourth of the light entering the sensor). The F/2.8 used in N8 is really good spec for any fixed focal length lens, and should be regarded as such.

So the point is: smaller number means bigger aperture, not smaller. 2.8 is double the light of 4.0 and four times as much of 5.6 and wight times as much as 8.0 after the f/.

This phone shall be a big hit in the mobile market. i am impressed with nokia fast navigation system via ovi map and impressive camera quality. I regretted giving up my n86 for samsung pixon12, even though the latter is 12mp on hindsight n86 pictures takes clearer and sharper. I expect n8 photo quality to overtake sony satio.
at 12.9cm, this phone is very portable in the pocket but the camera part should not be protruding it compromise everything else. i doubt n86 will be any threat to iphone in terms of touchscreen/processing speed and apps functions.

Just received my N8 here in the US, and surprised to see that it cannot view or enter in Chinese text!?
Will have to return it soon.
I travel to China often and need a phone where I can enter in text messages in Chinese, and read Chinese websites, and also recognized Chinese files. After placing some mp3 files on the device, all of the files names, and song titles show up as square boxes!? This makes the phone practically usless for me.
I would have thought with the China market the biggest in the world, and Nokia knowing that some people in the US might travel to China, or might speak Chinese that they would have at least kept some Chinese language support in all phones.
Apple iphones have no problem right out of the box to view and enter in Chinese text.
Nokia you could have done a better job making it easier for people, after all its only software.

I agree with you completely. I also just bought the N8, and to my horror, I realized it doesn't support the Chinese language. This is so pitiful. The N8 touts quad band support yet cannot read any oriental language out of the box. Must I go to China to buy the Chinese N8? International language support should be included; it's included in every other OS (Palm, Android, iOS, Blackberry OS)! I can't read the tags for my Chinese MP3 files, I can't read Japanese emails, I can't even look at websites that have any oriental text. Why Nokia failed to include international language support is beyond me. Symbian ^3 supports all these languages, because phones have been released in those respective countries! The Chinese N8 has oriental text support, why doesn't the American version? Is this a regional carrier lockdown contract? Is this because you don't want Chinese users accessing WIFI? Nokia please do what's right for the consumer and stop making our lives so difficult. Thank you.

I have been using a Nokia N97 mini and its BIGGEST problem seems to reside in being grossly underpowered in regards to the available RAM.
Much has already been said about the N8’s 680MHz processor but personally I believe that it’ll do just fine in that regards, HOWEVER, coming with the N97 experience I’m quite concerned about the N8 only featuring 256MB of RAM. You’ll probably say that S^3 handles the processes more efficiently but the same has been said about S^1 – and it proved to be totally untrue (at least with regards to RAM)
Any comment on that?

Nokia N8 is one of the worst handset I have ever had… I was the one who was promoting this device to everyone before launch and after launch but this Nokia people have screwed me.. with a week of purchase my handset was continuously resta…rting for a minimum 30-40 times in a day.. I took it to care center and they flashed it but nothing worked..
Later they told they need to send the handset to Delhi Head Office, which was sent on 27th And nothing happened till now, Its just revert is going on is shown from last 4 days..
I wont entertain this kind of service, I would move towards a legal action on this as I have a Job Sheet which says Target Deadline for handset is 25th of October and today is 2nd Nov..
The customer care guys told me If you want you can go ahead with the Legal Case.. This is what Nokia is doing in India now..

I have problem with receiving calls with this type of phone (Nokia N8). There are a lot of this phones experiencing with this kind of problem in our operator . We are able to make a calls but is not possible to receive calls. Releasing is initiated from Mobile phone Nokia N8 and calls canceled . Is there any problem with this kind of phone,maybe is not registered our MCC for Mobile Terminating calls or any software problem. Please provide with info.

i had all the problems that you guys mentioned. i gave back and take the new1, everithing is ok except camera
i didnt take off the plastic from camera and i am afraid to it take off because i'm still thinking images are terrible because off that plastic. if i take off the plastic and images are still no good i dont know what im going to do
I'm quite convinced that the 1st release of N8 has technical errors and I hope you will fix that until the 2nd release comes out
try to take money back and wait for the 2nd release, i made mistake now its too late

Being a deeply loyal customer and trying to give them all the benefit of the doubt they still manage to convince me that I’m wasting my time. I had a Nokia n85 for two years. Earlier this year it started giving me trouble with the screen, it would black out while the phone was still on. I heard about the N8 and became extremely excited about it. For about the last three months the only way I could use my old phone was by plugging it into the TV and using that as the monitor, but I was set on waiting for the N8 so I dealt (even though its release date kept getting pushed) finally the time comes its available for pre order! I go to nokia.com to order the phone and a problem occurs and the order is canceled… ok I’ll just order again right… NO I can’t because the order was canceled Nokia won’t let me order it for another month cause no one can tell the system what to do (especially in India) so my account is on some sort of system hold. Apparently the system can do whatever it wants and no one has any control over it! I tell them “I’M TRYING TO GIVE YOU MONEY AND YOUR TELLING ME THE SYSTEM SAYS NO!!!” “Please try again in a month sir”.
Ok so whatever I’ll order it from Amazon to see if it becomes available to me sooner (I need a phone!) Great, Amazon says it’s ready sooner than anticipated!

Ok so I receive the phone and get to hold it in my hands after months of starring at pictures and videos of it, exciting! Follow the proper procedure charge it first then insert the SIM and memory cards and turn it on. Ok its starting up… no, no ok turn it on again, there it goes, great! Oh look there’s an update ok… wait the phone is rebooting… ok let’s try that again, wait no rebooting again. Ok let me just let it sit there for a moment. I grab my laptop to see what others are saying about it. Guess what, my phone isn’t the only one that randomly reboots over and over again, but some of these people are saying that it went off and won’t turn back on, check my phone, sure enough it’s off and won’t turn on. I give it an hour and it turns on. Right away I plug it into the comp and reinstall the software version just in case then I sync it on OVI. The next morning I see the phone rebooting on my night stand, I give the benefit of the doubt “I’m half asleep who knows what I saw” I say. Works fine for the first full work day. Next day around 1pm I’m having lunch and the phone on the table reboots, and then again and again. Time to call India (Nokia customer care) “let’s try restoring factory setting sir” ok I’ll humor them and ask him for his direct number so I can call from a diff phone “just ask for an N8 specialist” ok, so I hang up the phone and begin to enter the code, but the phone freezes and wont react and then turns off, and won’t turn on. I call Nokia and explain again all that has happened, and add that I’ve read others are having similar issues. “Ok sir what we recommend is exchanging it where you purchased it from and hopefully we will come out with an update to fix the problem from happening again in the future”.
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!! Day three, phone still won’t turn on…

I like the look of the N8, but i`ve a different approach. I always wait a long time before buying. For example we only bought our new E71,s about 3 months ago and they were the last models in the Three store.
That might seem a bit of a weird approach – but over many years (I`m 61) I`ve found this to be good practice with anything. Cars too. We have avoided a lot of grief by buying new cars only after they have been in production a few years.
It shouldn`t be like that, but it is. Take my advice and hold back from purchasing these – first to the market gadjets. It becomes very satisfying to let the `duds` become obvious by reading forums and then buy something over a year in production and on it`s third firmware update.

I bought my N8 a 2 days ago as part of a deal, and I'm already having problems – first of all, I'm finding the sound is very low in phone calls, and that the touch-screen is still active when I have the phone to my ear. This means that I have disconnected several phone calls by accident. This never used to be a problem with my 5800.
The touch screen is sometimes extremely sensitive, and other times, completely unresponsive.
And I have used the photo edit program twice – the 2nd time, it took a minute to save my file, then the phone froze. I had to restart the phone, which is frustrating. Considering Nokia's using it's photographic capabilities as a major selling point, you'd think they'd have a more stable system in the edit program.
Thankfully I have a 10-day cooling off period with my telco. Hopefully I can exchange it, or maybe find another brand. So far, my experience with the N8 has been a step backwards from the 5800. If anything, it should be able to perform perfectly as a mobile phone, and that hasn't been satisfactory, either.

i bought nokia n8 on 25thoct nd it turned off suddenly while talkin on phone within the first week. i've waited for 4 days to get it turned on but its off no use, i've taken it nokia care they said they have to send it to delhi and it takes 12days to come back don't know how it comes back. i'm very much depressed with n8…..

Will there be updates which adds NTFS support for USB OTG? Because most HD movies are over 4GB in size but because we can't read NTFS formatted disks, it's like a wasted talent for the N8… then again it's a great phone! Never regret it! And love the fact I can use a USB mouse with it! Coolest product from Nokia!

@ Kim: You shall obviously be able to snap pictures from the front camera[ secondary camera]. Start the camera. Click options, click use secondary camera icon. Then, either u click the camera key on the side of the device or u click the icon on the screen [ between the options and exit icon ]. Hope this information is useful. Cheers!!

@ Einar, ofcourse the touch screen is sensitive which means that you rule your device at your finger tips. Next time i would suggest you that when you make a call just lock the screen before you place your device beside your ear. I honestly feel that nokia has created a marvel this time. I had my N8 3 weeks earlier. Its awesome. no problems. Wait for the next software updates. installing them will make your device fluid.

Nokia N8 is not in stock in any of the Nokia Priority Dealer shops in Bangalore. I have booked a Nokia N8 which is now more than 12 days waiting for it. Please let me why there is a delay ?

I just purchased my N8 few hous ago in Saudi Arabia and by switching on the set and starting familiarising my self with it I was shocked that the unit keeps restarting by itelf, although I was prompted to download new software but nothing changed the unit keeps switching off and on again, this is not a good start with this so called "Nokia's peace of art", also i noticed from above comments that other N8 owners are facing same problem but no responce from Nokia team on how to solve it.

now I regret buying this phone, keeps freezing when on-line, and you can not add any other languages as it has only English and Filipino!!!!!!

i have purchased handset 0n 9 nov 2010, in one week it started giving power issue.. i went to service center after 2 days ,same issue arise, then they people send to delhi for repair…
what a bad experience with nokia N8(orange).
it a big price tag(rs2300) but very bad experience )
just given today to hyderbad nokia care to repair today 22 nov 2010.
they said it wil take 10-15 working days to fix it.(they r sending it to delhi)

The problem i'm facing every day is the proximity sensors. , when i'm on a call, the phone gets (Supposed to be) locked but actually on every other call my ear touches the hold option and the call goes to hold, at times it even leads to calling some other contact of mine and putting the existing call on hold. I'm not able to change it.

Hi Guys,
It seems a lot of people are pretty confused about Nokia C7 and N8.
First, the basic difference between the two phones are:
1) C7 has 8 MP fixed focus camera with dual LED flash | N8 has 12 MP with Xenon Flash (like we have in actual SLR cameras)
2) N8 has an HDMI port | C7 has no HDMI
3) C7 comes with 8 GB card, expandable to 32GB | N8 comes with 16 GB expandable to 32 GB
Now, I have used both the phones and I appreciate C7 more because of its sleek stylish design and amazing features. Extra features mentioned above in N8 do not make it a greater phone than C7.
All important features are there in C7. How many people actually connect their phone with their HD LCD Tv. You can still play your HD recorded videos of C7 on TV by using a laptop.
N8 is costlier by approx $100 to C7. Personally, I loved C7 design and features. N8 is slightly is not-so-good-looking phone.

Another problem and trouble shooting….
Some customers are complaining of N8 and C7 rebooting again and again. My experience says that this problem is not in all handsets.
It occured in my C7 when I tried to install an incompatible application forcibly.
People get your facts straight. Both the phones N8 and C7 are great (C7 is my personal favorite). When you use them, just understand them first, read their manual quickly, use only OVI store applications.
Thats it…Enjoy and have a great experience using either of these phones

Dude nothing on this earth is perfect. Also, not every N8 would perform great. For all those unfortunate users N8 handset is creating problems, I must tell you the problems are rare. I really feel sorry for those with faulty handsets. Please take your handsets to Nokia Service Center.
As for my experience, N8 is a great phone. That is my choice but only the better looks of C7 take over.
I would suggest that you visit a nokia priority and try out every feature of N8 yourself.
Bottomline: Even highly rated Apple products like iPhone and iMac face very general problems of rebooting, screen wear-out etc…
Trust Nokia and get your fav device.

I am a Nokia over and I was waiting since last 6 months for N8. As soon as it launched, I started listening about it's problems of restarting again and again it's own and hanging. I have visited Nokia store and experience N8. My observations are: N8 is having very nice touch screen, I felt it's response is better than i-phone4. Camera is very 12 Mega Pixels, like any digital camera. But it's camera is having an shutter inside the back glass, I don't know what is the use of this, It has added a mechanical rotating component in the phone, and it is very sensitive to stuck & spoil. In one Nokia center i have seen a N8, whose shutter is not opening and no more photographs from N8.
Second, camera zoom level is very low compared to ode nokia N series mobiles. The space they have provided for shutter can be used for better zoom.
Third, if we open 5 – 6 application together, it got hang, and need to power off & restart. I think processor & RAM requirement is more for simbion^3, which is not available in N8.
C7 is also very nice but it also has hanging problem if you open 4-6 applications together. Don’t think C7 is having 8 Mega pixel camera, it is of no use, it is not having Autofocus, means not very good quality of photo, quality just like normal VGA.
In Malaysia, unsuccess of N8 has drastically increased the sale of iphone. Lots of people like me, who was waiting for Nokia smart phones are now going for i-phone4.

N8 has been heaven to me and am able to do everything.
Today i got Skype and earlier was using Fring (Gtalk Included).
With SPB Shell the UI looks even more pleasing
. Have lots of HD games like Avatar, Asphalt 5, Real Football and Cricket.
I get my emails with only headers and then later can request for full mail be if my official mail or the gmail.
Even my social networks are superb.
Only problem even i face is that youtube videos are of not such High quality.

I have a Nokia N8 It was delivered to me late November to the USA. The phone looks good and I have no complains except a few things been going on lately.
1) I ve been getting a message to insert sim card and restart phone more often this week it happened more than three times already.
2) At one point in time I was using the application and for some reason I was unable to go back to my home screen. Until I restarted the phone.
3) Also it keeps going into Off Mode and when i switched it back to normal it was not able to recover until I restarted the phone.
4) I agree with one of the users that sometimes I end the call accidently when I am talking on it
so I am not sure how many people are experiencing these symptoms but this is very annoying is Nokia doing anything about it ? is there a sw update that can fix these bugs?
Also from a design perspective I am also dissapointed that when someone pays top dollars for a gadget like this and come to find out that it does not support another language (i.e. Arabic) this should be standard. Thanks

I have been facing some problems with my N8 and they r quite annoying.
1st. When there is a new message, by one touch conversation panel opens. if i try to open inbox from this panel it literally hangs for 30sec or more. Similar problem occurs if i try to create message from phone-book message icon.
2nd. While playing music player if the FM transmitter is turned on from music player menu. Then phone hangs for about 15secs, even though the audio is coming.
3rd. If the mms size is large operators do not allow the mms to be sent. hence mms stays in outbox. if you try to delete from there u simply do not get any option. then any how i read forums and found out i can delete it from conversations to get rid of it. how annoying is that !
Last but not the least important. My N8 simply wants to stay connected to data connection 3G, 3.5G or wifi 24/7. even i turned all widgets to offline mode. The only work around i found was to go to connectivity and set connections to Wlan only. but then when i open an application requiring data connection then i had to go to settings and turn on the access to automatic. I think if you control this feature a lot of battery can be saved, plus the network data cost of course.

Hi Guys,
In this reply, I'll try to cover all of your questions..
1) Nokia N8 supports 32 GB…comes with 16GB
2) Nokia N8 has xenon flash. It cannot be used as a torch
3) Thomas, for greek language support, please call your local Nokia support center..
4) In Australia, N8 would be available without any service support (even orange)…you can choose any service provider
5) N8 is based on Symbian^3 OS….though this is not as advanced as Andriod OS versions in terms of functionality, visual support, User-Interface etc but is definitely better than all older symbian versions. I agree it should be at par (if not better) with Android OS capabilities
6) N8's capacitive touch is neither heat nor pressure sensitive. Resistive ones are pressure sensitive.
7) In few cases, N8 is having hanging problems, restart problems…I assure you guys that its not with every handset. Some handset sold out in a particular lot are faulty…please bring these to Nokia's notice…and have these replaced..
N8 comes with international warranty
9) N8's battery runs out pretty quickly…few tips:
a) Keep your WiFi off when not in use
b) Keep the GPRS off when not in use
c) Adjust the max screen brightness to a convenient level and not too high
d) Remove unnecessary widgets from home screens
e) Disable the haptic feedback feature. This is the slight vibration response you feel while you type of touch

I am an extremely disappointed owner of the Nokia N8. My brand new phone would go off and refuse to turn back on at all. My phone has now been with the Nokia Care Centre for THREE FULL WEEKS and I still haven't gotten my phone back despite several follow-ups.
I wish I had never bought the Nokia N8.

hi, i wanted to buy the nokia N8 but as i was online looking at the comments/ forum posted by other user's of the N8, i noticed that there are a lot of complication with the phone. Such as the phone lags and it sometimes restart. My friend suggested not to buy this phone as he has one. He said that the phone is quite slow and 2 weeks after the date purchased the phone would not charge. Later on it had problems while switching it on. So i would life to verify this problem if this is true.
In addition to that i headed to a shop nearby and asked about this phone d shopkeeper said that in 10 phones sold maybe 5 of it had some problems in the power and stuff. Please help me in this or suggest a nokia Phone which is similar with this. Thanks

The camera in my old N96 phone was able to take multiple photos for 5secs or as long as you keep the camera button pressed. But unfortunately this is not there in the N8. My friends N86 has a built in Panorama function while my phone needs to close the camera and go to apps and open a differrent software to use panorama. Can these problems get fixed by giving us an software update?
Why is that I cant find so many applications in the Ovi store in China. I find so many on the interent in the ovi store,
but there only a limited apps for each country. When I went to Thailand I found there are more apps.
Is there a solution for this problem in the ovi store? It only shows the apps in the local country and most of the apps you cant download them.
I have been using my N8 for almost 2 months.. there are no problems with the power… everything works perfect except Ovi store has a limited apps and its even more limited in the Ovi store in China. This phone has so many functions… very nice phone.. really worth the price.. But it needs to be updated with apps and firmware.. (eg. Skype still doesn't support video calls,, voice actions for writing a message, opening applications, calling and searching… )

I am a big Nokia fan, used it almost every day, my last one was N97 and I was able to watch local TV stations without connecting to the internet. OK first of all I would like to make it really obvious I kind of hate your Nokia N8 . I have it for almost 2 weeks now and it has caused me only trouble .
1 . If I edit a photo and save it . I cannot find it anywhere. I looked in every single folder of the phone.I tryed editing differend photos thinking that it was my photo that had the problem .. The phone had it .
2. Second also as someone already mentioned I have closed several call while i had the phone to to my ear becaue the screen does not lock .
3. When i plug in my headphones the Back , Play , Forward button on my headset do not work from the first try . I have to unplug the headset and try again until they work .
4.The cord of the headset is a terrible material and where the cord plugs in the phone its so sensitive it bends and twists it looks like it will break in half and i have to pay extra attention to it .
5. The screen is over sensitive .
6 . I open a Wi-Fi connection use it for a few minutes, close it and after a few seconds it will auto turn on by itself after selecting " WLAN scanning OFF " it will turn on by itself and continue using it thus wasting a lot of my battery .
8.The speaker quality is very low .
9.When i make a playlist if i want to add songs in the playlist i have to tap each song and if i have 500 songs or more i have to tap 500 times… thats just retarded . !
10. There is no search option when you are in the music player to search the desired song you want. Retarded !
11.When in the Main Menu you have 2 buttons available " Options " and " Exit " pressing exit will only HIDE the main menu because if I open the OPEN APPLICATIONS setion MAIN MENU IS STILL THERE ! In order to properly close the menu you need to Select Option and > EXIT . RETARDED >
12. When trasmiting in FM i cannot pug in my headphones .
13. When transmiting in FM i cannot hear any of the music I play because the phone speaker does not work with the FM transmiter. Only thing i can do is see the name of the song I chose .
14. HOW THE HELL DO I DELETE A WLAN I FOUND ? IT DOES NOT HAVE A DELETE OPTION .
THESE are only i few that came into my mind… FOR GODS SAKE REMOVE THIS PHONE FROM PRODUCTION … I JUST WASTED 400 euros ON A PIECE OF CRAP that only makes me angry when i hold it in my hand.

I had such high hopes for this phone after my E63 and E72.
This phone is garbage and runs on horrible software.

My N8 went blind an hour ago. Trying the slide unlock key, power key, menu key, no visible response. I called the number using another phone. The dial was successful on the other phone, but no audio/visual/vibrating output on mine. What do I do? The phone’s barely a month old.

salam….i am using china nokia N8 it is having lil bit network problem….that is when im putting reliance sim in it….it shows written reliance then send some confirguation setting to company….and after that it tells…unable to connect..plzz helpme..may god bless you!
